Cynthia Erivo talked about the huge hurdles she faced while performing in Wicked and how demanding this experience proved to be. During a recent Q&A with Kristen Bell at the Academy Museum, as said by People, Cynthia talked about how intense her performance has been and the conscious effort she has made to embrace these challenges. She said she “consciously runs towards things” that will push her limits because, in her opinion, staying physically engaged keeps one active mentally as well. “This will keep me going on both fronts: movement and thought,” she noted, part of her ongoing campaign to ensure a balance. For Cynthia, that really deep connection between body and mind is critical, which her process ensures as a performer, as that would make possible the most authentic and impactful portrayal.

She further added that mental and physical strength have a symbiotic relationship whereby the body at times dictates the actions of the mind while at others, the mind directs the body to move to achieve a particular goal.”The body sometimes leads the mind in performing different actions, and sometimes the mind directs the body on what to do,” she explained.. From the intense stunt work to his charger’s multifaceted emotional layers, Cynthia approached every aspect of the performance intending to push himself and evolve as an artist. This is just the sort of dynamic in which she completely immersed herself while preparing for Wicked as it requires the role to have physical endurance coupled with mental focus and persistence.

Cynthia also stressed that it was all about getting to a stage where body and mind work perfectly in unison, “I want both parts to work quite energetically.

Cynthia’s Grueling Preparation for Wicked

Cynthia further divulged that there were times in which during the Wicked schedule, she would only get three hours of sleep per night. Her daily schedule included waking up for a two-hour workout, spending two hours in the makeup chair ahead of call time in the morning, at 5 a.m. Yikes.

Cynthia mentioned her practical effects and stunts, particularly flying, where she spent rigorous hours in workout sessions listening to intense grinding air machine sounds to fully prepare her body.”I have never felt such a thing before but knew that I wanted to pursue it,”.” . I had flown a little in a small aircraft, but nothing at all like this before,” she shared. According to her, this challenge was not only about “being able to hang on wires” but being able to perform in the air smoothly and naturally because her body would have to be physically capable of doing so. she explained. “It requires a really strong core because the wires are what carry you from one point to another.” Strength building included long hours of core workouts, if possible, with additional training for stability and endurance for control while suspended for some time.

So, for Cynthia not only did flying a stunt as “flying from point A to point B” or “fly from point A to point B” entail much more than that, she further explained how it needed to be a collaborative work of strength, precision, and grace, with each move. My stunt coordinator, Jo McLaren, helped me as much as she could. She asked, ‘Do you really want to do all of this?’ And I replied, ‘Yes.'” To be convincing in front of the camera was not the sole purpose for Cynthia; unfortunately, it meant involvement in every aspect within her character. To really get into her role and make the scenes believable, she needed to stretch her physical boundaries.

What I needed to do was prepare so that, when the wires worked to move me from point A to point B to point C-if we’re doing a loop to loop, which is that large loop-I’d have to maneuver myself over and around without legs trailing behind me.”
