Damon Wayans Jr. has said how he worked with his father again for “Poppa’s House” and filmed that scene in “Shrinking.”
WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Season 2 of Shrinking!
Damon Wayans Jr. has made quite the number of people laugh for their television lives from New Girl to Happy Endings, and now he has extended his proficiently sharp comedic talent to the AppleTV+ series called Shrinking.
The guest star, who is also of the critically-honored comedy-drama, spoke with HuffPost on Monday concerning his new guest spot in the said show, which is about a bereaved therapist, Jason Segel, who begins to break rules with his patients and gets intertwined into their messy lives.
Wayans joined Shrinking’s Season 2 as Derrick, a friend of Derek’s (Ted McGinley), who is humorously dubbing Derrick #2. Wayans’ character serves as the romantic interest to Gaby (Emmy nominee Jessica Williams), and the two show impressive onscreen chemistry in flirtatious moments that feel unscripted, feeling to the viewers as a fly on the wall.
As observed by Wayans, this is large due to the fact that most of their scenes have improvisation including the hilarious incident during which Derrick finds a vibrator forgotten in Gaby’s “breakup box.”
“It was a moment when [I and Williams] looked at each other in the eye and thought, ‘This is happening,'” he reminisced of their first time on screen to one another. The initial moments we saw each other managed to extract much, but we continued on forever.. There were a lot of different improvised bits from that scene that we’d never gotten to use.”
Wayans compared all the instances of improvisation present in Shrinking to the ABC sitcom Happy Endings in which he played the character Brad Williams between 2011 and 2013.
“It’s like, I got that we need to be ready for Happy Endings,” Wayans said. Wayans said. Before Adam Pally and Casey Wilson could come along, Eliza Coupe had to get ready.
Absolutely, I am well aware of the fact that reaching Happy Endings has always been within reach even before being ready, said Wayans. “But we had to get them ready since there were also Adam Pally and Casey Wilson.”
According to Wayans, the Shrinking cast possesses “that same vibe,” which he defined as “weird,” because this series on Apple TV+ is “the most celebrated series with so much drama inside.”
Still truthfully, concerned about the comic one of them said, “actually everyone here set out to add humor to it.”
Wayans has also named his preferred co-stars he would love to spend time with while on set.
“My first scene was shot on my very first episode, and he put his arm around me and said, ‘It’s great to have you here, buddy.’ That’s how I remember Wayans, chuckling,” he said. He was just so friendly to me, and I thought, ‘OK, unc.’
“Michael [Urie] is [also] great. Harrison [Ford] pours out so many funny things whenever we take a break between shots. Every time we are off camera, he gives me a new funny story,” Wayans added.
The punch lines are worth it,” he said.A nay-sayer at the first point assumes, “I don’t know whether people recognize how funny [Ford] is.”
Although Wayans has yet to officially be registered for the third season of the show, he mentioned that he would be willing to jump in a second to reprise that role.
We shall see as time unfolds, but I have a feeling that whatever plot [they] will put in there will be amazing because everything that they do [with the show] is just pure all successes and no failures, he said. I’m excited to see where this leads.
The Let’s Be Cops star also expressed excitement about working on another series with his pop and fellow comedian In Living Color alum Damon Wayans Sr, which is Poppa’s House, which premiered last October. The program got renewed for its second season just last month.
“Poppa’s House is “very similar to Shrinking,” Wayans said, in that “it’s really family-oriented and warm, and supportive.” You don’t feel like they’re waiting for you to fail.
“Pretty cool to be in a scene with my dad and see him before you make him laugh,” he added.Capture these moments onto video so they may be remembered forever, and then reflect on them by saying, ‘We accomplished that. ‘
According to Wayans, fans should be on the lookout for him sharing screen time with Amy Schumer in Netflix’s Kind of Pregnant, which does not yet have an announced date for release. He will also be found on CBS’s game show Raid the Cage for the second season, starting Jan. 8. All of Season 1 and Season 2 of Shrinking are live now on AppleTV+. The season two finale will broadcast on December 25.
