“The Lord is always there, but I figured He would not talk to me at this time,” Deion said, talking with Kirk Franklin. You wanted me when I was going through one of the darkest periods of my life. At the beginning, when I gave my life to God, I thought the church was not honest with me. he said. There was this facade that everyone in the churches was perfect, with no flaws, and lived spotless lives. I heard that and felt alone when I discovered that wasn’t my reality.
Deion stressed how listening to Kirk Franklin has become the key to turning the life around for him. “I have put your music on the record player, and it spoke my struggles, whereas it gave me hopes at the same time. I was in a completely hopeless situation. I had only just become a new driver, was on the highway, and the weight of my situation was bearing down on me so heavily that I didn’t even think about ending my own life. My mind was overwhelmed by very intense internal chaos.” Then I listened to ‘Conquerors’ again, and it felt like something in me shifted. It was an awakening-a realization that I’m not alone in my struggles and that I could find my way back.”
He continued to give an account of one moment that marked one of the lowest points in his life, as he said, “I have never shared this in such depth before, but there happened to be a time when I thought I had exhausted all options.” I tried to take my life when driving my car near Cincinnati and went Of the drop, about 30 or 40 feet. I was not feeling any suicidal thoughts; but rather, I felt like one foot was on the edge-both in terms of psychology and physiology. Somehow, I got out of that crash almost completely unscathed. That was when I truly understood that the Lord had kept me alive for a reason.
Deion credited ideal music to Kirk Franklin for being that vehicle to help him restore emotional balance.
